When a Beautiful Homepage Kills Conversions

A high-end B2B site had one of the most beautiful homepages we've ever seen. It also had a 0.4% conversion rate. We broke down what went wrong.

We were asked to review a website for a high-end B2B services firm. The design was exceptional — award-winning, actually. Cinematic hero, custom motion throughout, gorgeous typography. The kind of website that wins Awwwards.

Their conversion rate was 0.4%. For context, a well-optimized B2B site converts in the 2–5% range. Something was very wrong.

What the site did brilliantly

  • Visual sophistication that matched the brand
  • Cinematic scroll experience
  • Beautiful case study presentation
  • Excellent motion design with purpose

What it did wrong

  • Nobody could tell what the company actually did in the first 8 seconds
  • The primary CTA was buried below the fold, after a 4-screen scroll
  • Case studies showed what was made, not what changed
  • No clear reason to contact them specifically vs. the 10 competitors
Beautiful design without clarity is expensive decoration. It impresses designers. It loses customers.

The real problem

The site was designed for a design audience. Every decision was made to look impressive to other designers — peers who might one day award it. Nobody had been in the room making decisions for the prospect who arrived from Google with 6 seconds of patience and a real problem to solve.

What we changed

We didn't strip the beauty. We added clarity on top of it. A single sentence above the fold that said what they do and who it's for. A prominent CTA in the hero. Case studies restructured around outcomes, not aesthetics. Within three months, conversion went from 0.4% to 2.6%.

The design was never the problem. The problem was that the design was optimized for the wrong audience. This is the most common failure mode in high-end creative work: mistaking awards for outcomes.
